Lauren Mackellar | Founder of Robe Haircare

Formulated by celebrity hair stylist Lauren Mackellar, Robe Haircare brings together modern, active ingredients, industry expertise and traditional modalities to make naturally beautiful hair accessible to all. It’s intelligent, effective haircare – made effortless.

In this interview, Lauren divulges her secret non-negotiation morning supplement, the ins and outs of her healthiest habits and how she approaches self-care post chemotherapy.

What does your morning routine look like?
I’ve always been interested in health, but I'm even more conscious of what I'm doing to help my brain and body recover from the chemotherapy and radiation treatments I’ve had over the past 3 years. I’m still on medications, so I want to help my body as much as I can. This means that my morning routine is pretty extensive!

I'm an early riser, so I wake up naturally at around 6.30am. I make one mug of hot water with half a lemon, and some shilajit with boiling water in another. Shilajit is a fermented plant resin made of plants grown naturally in the Himalayas. Its mineral-rich and anti-inflammatory, so these two things have become my non-negotiables over the past year. It gives me a natural energy boost, but I love a morning coffee too – so I'll often make a bulletproof coffee if I'm at home, and if I'm out, I'll add in some lion’s mane which is great for mental alertness and clearing brain fog. I also add in MCT oil to the bulletproof, which is great for brain health.

I also like to give myself a lymphatic drainage stimulation to help my body flush out any toxins, and I recently started dry brushing too, so I do that before my morning shower. Breakfast is usually a smoothie with loads of berries, sea moss gel and chia seeds, or eggs. Once all of that is done, I'm showering and then open my laptop to begin work.

What is your approach to self-care?
Since my diagnosis and treatment, my approach to self-care is more of a daily routine – whereas previously it was something I thought of as a luxury.

What is your healthiest habit?
I think my healthiest habit is my diet and the supplements I use on a daily basis. I try to stick to organic produce now and I'm constantly learning about new ways that I can improve or optimise the fuel I'm putting in my body. I love feeling my body responding positively to the things I'm doing to help it heal, and I think anyone who has been through or dealing with chronic health issues will understand and agree that after you've had a life-threatening situation – you want to feel better as soon as possible and will try anything to help that happen faster.

What is your biggest indulgence?
I love good quality wine and champagne! I used to be a sugar addict but over the years I have switched over to being a salty snack gal, so a glass or two of red and some fries or cheese is heaven to me!

How do you wind down before bed?
I'll make a cup of nighttime tea (my tea drawer is of professional tea connoisseur standards!), do my nighttime skincare routine, heat up my heat pack and pop it under the covers. I do love watching TV in bed, but when I'm having trouble unwinding I'll listen to a podcast for a while and then meditate instead, because I find it helps me when I'm feeling over-stimulated.

What’s your go-to LOVEBYT product, or flavour?
I love the Charcoal and Mint Botanical Toothpaste! I find I drink more coffee during the days when I'm at Robe meetings or on work trips, and I see SUCH a difference to the whiteness of my teeth when I use it.
After being a hairdresser for so long, I became very conscious of not ever wanting to have coffee breath and would always have a toothbrush at work to help me stay feeling fresh during the day. The habit has stayed with me, so now I carry my toothbrush and toothpaste with me so that I can brush my teeth quickly in-between meetings. I always prefer to be over-prepared rather than caught out!

Do you have any oral beauty hacks?
Not really a hack – but I will do calf-raises while I brush my teeth – it’s great for helping your lymphatic system, but also great to help tone your legs at the same time!
